Joe Montana

14″w x 7″h x 1-3/4″d

This was fun. I got to collaborate with my daughter Laura Donnelly.

We belonged to a “not your ordinary book club”. Wherein each member is given a choice between two packs of paper containing a few coordinating miscellaneous items. We discuss the theme of the paper and items and go home to work on a project to bring back completed the next month. We each take a turn to show our project, discuss the meaning and techniques used.

This particular month’s project was “sports”. Since Laura’s favorite athlete has always been Joe Montana it was a perfect fit. This book is the end of a thin thread of an idea. Laura thought to use Joe Montana football cards she had in her collection. Surfing the web and ultimately eBay she found a full lifetime set of Joe Montana cards for $5.00 – from baby to the last played football game. She also added a photo she received from a sports photographer friend (Joe Montana shaking Dan Marino’s hand in his last game) along with her ticket stub from his final game at Joe Robbie Stadium. The ideas started flying from there. The end result is an awesome tribute to a great football player – in 49er colors – Scarlet and Gold.

Outside
Book: Chip board cut to size. The spine was moistened to assist in the bending of the chipboard and reduce tearing.
Cover: Burgundy Poster board spray glued to chip board. An eighth inch space was left around the perimeter for distressing with Tim Holtz distress inks and black permanent marker.
Spine: Cut up old leather jacket. Punched holes and threaded with leather shoe laces then glued to spine. “Joe Montana”: General household stencils painted white and glued to poster board after poster board was adhered to chipboard. “Montana”: Individual vintage lead letters used in identifying x-rays (x-ray techs would place these on the x-ray screen before taking an x-ray – leaving an imprint on the film). The letters were painted white and glued to black strip of card stock for contrast and then glued poster board after poster board was adhered to chipboard.

Inside
Inside Cover: Scarlet Poster board spray glued to chip board. An eighth inch space was left around the perimeter for distressing with Tim Holtz distress inks and black permanent marker.
Metal document holder: A long metal document holder that, when bent out at both ends, creates prongs for holding paper. A general office supply found at a garage sale. One each was glued to the left side of the inside covers leaving room for an acetate picture.
Pages (each side): Twelve sheets of gold card-stock were cut. Each page is 1/2 inch shorter and narrower than the previous page creating a stair step effect.
Labels: Printed labels describing the card(s) on each page – white card stock, black ink, varying fonts. Glued to bottom off each page (front only).
Cards: Each card was put in a plastic sleeve.
Hinges: The hinges were created by grommet the closed side of notebook divider tabs to same size card stock (they come in single tabs to be adhered to a single sheet of paper to separate sections in a notebook) then sandwiching the plastic sleeve in the other side – creating a hinge so both sides of the cards can be viewed.
